Third hospital seminar

The 3rd Hospital Seminar was held in the student hall in the library building on Monday, October 15th. Special guest Dr. Yuji Tsukiyama, who operates a dental clinic in Fukuoka, presented a lecture titled “Points of Success of Oral Health Department: Standardization of Preventions”.

Third-years visit sewage treatment plant

It was decided that, from this year, third-year students would visit a sewage treatment plant as part of the study of hygiene, which starts in the latter half of the school year. The students were separated into three groups for visits to Clean Lake Suwa, the biggest sewage treatment plant in Nagano Prefecture, commencing Monday, October 1st.
The students observed the process whereby sewage, which is releasing odor in the first sedimentation tank, flows into the reaction tank, where organic matter in the sewage is decomposed by microorganisms in activated sludge, and then becomes clear water by the time it is in the final sedimentation tank.

One-day autumn university trial

The university dental school held a one-day autumn university trial on Saturday, October 13th. The twenty-two participants were students preparing for entrance examinations, as well as their parents who applied from all over Japan. Dr. Toshifumi Morimoto, MDU Dean, greeted the participants, and Mr. Hideki Yoshizawa, a professor on the liberal arts faculty, explained brief details of the university entrance examination for 2008. After Professor Nobuyuki Udagawa of the Oral Biochemistry course spoke to the participants as an MDU graduate, the participants went to the university hospital to see dentists treating patients and then toured the campus. In the afternoon, the participants had mock training of treating carious teeth. They removed the bad part of a model tooth using equipment and filled in the cavity with composite resin. This mock training is highly appreciated as it makes prospective students feel closer to being dentists.

50th anniversary meeting of The Japanese Society of Periodontology

Ms. Tomoko Kuno, Assistant Professor of Operative Dentistry, received the first prize for excellence among specialized doctors for her poster presentation at the 50th anniversary meeting of The Japanese Society of Periodontology held in Tokyo on Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd of September.

Science education training for teachers in Nagano

Science education training was provided in training room 113 of the training building on Saturday, October 21st, open to teachers in elementary, middle and high schools in Nagano Prefecture. Five teachers participated. The training was provided as part of the specialized training program of Nagano Prefecture Education Center, aiming for the enhancement of the practical teaching ability of elementary, middle and high school teachers. This sixth annual training session was titled “Studying the functions of the heart and nerves using the frog”. The university’s Oral Physiology course presented a lecture and provided the training.

35th meeting of the Japanese Dental Society of Anesthesiology

The 35th meeting of the Japanese Dental Society of Anesthesiology took place in the Kitakyushu International Convention Center and Rihga Royal Hotel, in Kokura, for three days from Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th October. Dr. Katsuhito Himeno (a 25th academic year graduate), Assistant Professor in the university’s Dental Anesthesiology Department, received the Dentsply award. Dr. Kenji Murata, who is also a 25th academic year graduate and now works for Kobe Dental Center, received the prize of excellence for his thesis.

50th meeting of the Japanese Stomatological Society, Chubu region group

The 50th meeting of the Japanese Stomatological Society, Chubu region group, was held in the university’s lecture hall building on Saturday, October 20th, with Professor Masaru Shiojima of the university’s Dental Radiology course as the chair. The aims of the Japanese Stomatological Society are to make progress in the research of stomatological science, contribute to the development of medical science, contribute to academic culture and medical welfare, and to promote the health of the nation.
