Short summaries in English of this month's top stories in "Campus Today No. 286"
As part of the Chinese government’s national education program, Matsumoto Dental University Professor Akihiro Kuroiwa, of Prosthetic Dentistry 1, and Hiro Miyazawa, Professor of Oral Health Promotion of the Graduate School of Oral Medicine, were invited to Shanghai Medical College, affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where they gave lectures and training to local dentists and dental technicians on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th September. During the training, Mr. Hidetoshi Tanigaki, an MDU dental technician, demonstrated his techniques and gave instructions together with Professor Kuroiwa, and so contributed to raising the level of dental treatment in China.
The 8th Japanese Society of Orofacial Pain meeting / the 12th JAOP Joint Academic meeting was held in the university library building on Saturday, September 15th, and Sunday, September 16th, jointly chaired by Professor Eiji Kondo, Professor in the MDU Graduate School of Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Biology course, and Professor Shogo Minagi from Okayama University. The meeting included fifteen poster presentations, two special lectures presented by overseas guests, two educational lectures, a symposium on research into orofacial pain, and a symposium on clinical medicine of orofacial pain. On this occasion, the society held a public lecture titled “Diagnoses and treatment of tooth pain with indefinable cause — That pain, is the cause really a tooth?”.
The 2nd hospital seminar was held in room 601 of the main building on Thursday, September 20th. Guest speaker Professor Eiichi Saito of the Faculty of Rehabilitation, School of Medicine, Fujita Health University, presented a lecture titled “Medical treatment for the aged and expectations for solutions for dental, eating and swallowing problems”.
Professor Saito revealed the effectiveness of dental treatment for the aged through his health science research called “Correlation between dental treatment and ADL (activities of daily living) for the aged disabled” from 1997 to 2004. His lecture was based on his research.
The 49th academic / general meeting of the Japanese Association for Oral Biology was held at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Hokkaido, from Wednesday 29th to Friday 31st of August.
At the meeting, Dr. Takehiko Isogai, a special research student in the Graduate School of Oral Medicine Oral and Maxillofacial Biology course, received the prize of excellence (physiology category) for his poster presentation titled “Nerve communication between the maxillofacial oral movement region of the cerebral cortex and the thalamus in the guinea pig”.
The 29th meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) was held at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, from Sunday, September 16th, to Wednesday, September 19th. Researchers in basic and clinical research of bone arrived from all over the world to attend the meeting of this august society where they announced the results of their latest research. Many researchers from the MDU Institute for Oral Science (including Assistant Professor Toru Hiraga of Oral Anatomy II) also presented their research results.
On Wednesday, September 5th, 98 MDU fifth-year students sat the dental CBT common examination (computer based testing) for the academic year 2007 in classroom 101 of Campus Inn. The students tackled 320 questions over about six hours.
The 16th Society for Hard Tissue Regenerative Biology academic / general meeting was held in the student hall of the library building on Saturday, September 22nd. The principal organizers of the event were Hard Tissue Disease Analytics of the MDU Graduate School of Oral Medicine, Hard Tissue Research course. The meeting was chaired by Professor Toshiyuki Kawakami. The society holds meetings to exchange information of research on hard tissue and related tissue cells and research technology, and to promote the development of research and technology. The meeting included a symposium with the theme of “Biological principles required by hard tissue regenerative treatment”, and a special lecture presented by Professor Hidehiro Ozawa, the Director of the MDU Institute for Oral Science, titled “Bone morphological sciences -- advancement of methodology and research application”.
The MDU Alumni Association seminar for academic year 2007 was held in the student hall of the library building on Sunday, September 2nd, with 53 people attending. In the morning, Professor Yasutomo Yajima (Tokyo Dental College, Implant Laboratory) delivered a lecture on the two themes of “Drastically changing university hospitals” and “Implant system selection standards in the department”. In the afternoon, Dr. Hiroshi Hosoyama (a dentist working in Tsubame, Niigata) gave a lecture titled “For implant treatment”.
